A female inmate who walked out of the front door of the Harris County jail this morning is back in custody after evading police for a few hours, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Tammy Ann Smith, 50, was being held on misdemeanor theft charges originating in Liberty County, and was waiting to be transferred to the custody of the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office when she blended in with a crowd of inmates being released, HCSO reported.
Smith was apprehended in Highlands in east Harris County.
Smith is now facing felony escape charges and is being held on $10,000 bond.
An internal investigation into the incident is currently underway, according to HCSO.
