Man murdered protecting mother in southwest Houston
A man was killed while protecting his mother from a group of armed robbers Monday outside their southwest side home, according to the Houston Police Department.
The incident occurred Monday night at 8500 Sands Point Drive around 11 p.m.
The victim, James Weldon Ecford, 25, was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead, HPD reported.
“Mr. Ecford’s mother was exiting her vehicle at the above address when she was approached from behind by a male suspect who grabbed her purse and ran toward a white four-door vehicle,” HPD Homicide Division Sergeant T. Simmons and Officer S. Overstreet reported.
Ecford heard his mother scream for help and came outside and chased the suspect.
“The two fought and the suspect produced a gun and shot Ecford. A second shot was fired at Ecford’s mother but missed her. The suspect then got into the back seat of the waiting vehicle and the driver then fled the scene. The mother reported seeing a total of four black males (including the shooter) inside the vehicle.”
