Houston police are investigating the fatal crash that occurred at 7800 South Sam Houston Parkway West service road (Beltway 8) about 7:05 p.m. on Monday (August 8).
The identity of the male victim, 20, is pending notification to family members by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant F. Briones and Officer S. Lee reported:
The victim was driving a black Pontiac Trans Am at a high rate of speed eastbound on Beltway 8 when he lost control of the vehicle, drifted sideways and struck a telephone pole. The vehicle then partially caught fire.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the vehicle was transported to an area hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
The investigation is continuing.
