Investigation into Shooting Incident at 11050 Southwest Freeway
Houston police are investigating the shooting of an armed suspect by two HPD officers at 11050 Southwest Freeway (South U.S. Highway 59) service road after officers responded to a call to the business about 9:25 a.m. today (Jan. 8).
The identity of the male suspect, 26, is being withheld at this time. He is in critical condition at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital.
The two officers who discharged their duty weapons are Senior Officer S. Deroam and Officer G. Craig. Both officers are assigned to the Westside Patrol Division. Officer Deroam was sworn in as an officer in December 2002 and Officer Craig was sworn-in in March 2012.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant M. Ynosencio and Detectives E. Contreras, R. Gonzalez, M. Glover and D. Hobson reported:
Officers were dispatched to a hotel at the above address regarding a suspicious male with a gun. The caller stated the suspect was walking inside the hotel with a gun in his hand. Officers arrived and made contact with the suspect, who ran from the officers. A foot pursuit ensued, with the suspect running down the freeway service road and attempting to flag down a motorist. Officers continued to chase the suspect on foot, concerned that he was going to attempt to carjack a motorist. Officers gave numerous verbal commands to the suspect to drop his gun and, at one point, he pointed his gun at one of the officers. The suspect ran back to the hotel and, while in the parking lot, officers again gave the suspect verbal commands to drop the gun. It appeared the suspect was attempting to get back into the hotel through a side door. The suspect then began to raise his weapon towards officers. At that time, officers fearing for their lives and the lives of other citizens, discharged their duty weapons and shot the suspect. Officers immediately attempted to administer first aid to the suspect.
Houston Fire Department paramedics arrived and transported the suspect to Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital.
As is customary in officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, the incident is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the HPD Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
