On Monday, August 12, 2024, at 2:57 p.m., Hugo Mota, 41, was pronounced deceased at St. Joseph Hospital. Mota suffered a medical emergency in his cellblock and was transported by medical personnel to the clinic while life-saving measures were initiated. The Houston Fire Department EMS transported Mota to St. Joseph Hospital. The death has been reported to the Texas Commission on Jail Standards. The Houston Police Department is investigating the death in accordance with state law that requires all jail deaths to be investigated by an outside law enforcement agency. The Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Division is also investigating to determine whether all applicable policies and procedures were followed, which is standard following the death of a person in jail. Mr. Mota’s cause of death will be determined by an autopsy conducted by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
