HOUSTON, TX— The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is proud to present “Sheriff’s Connection: Driven to Justice,” a new video series that provides viewers with a closer look at hit-and-run crashes in Harris County and the challenges of solving them. This series aims to shed light on the tireless efforts of the Vehicular Crimes Division as they work to track down those responsible for these devastating crimes.
In the opening episode, viewers will learn about the tragic case of 37-year-old Alex Cerda, who was struck and killed in a hit-and-run crash nearly four years ago. The case remains unsolved despite ongoing efforts by law enforcement and the Cerda family’s relentless search for justice.
“These aren’t just crashes—they’re crimes that steal lives,” says Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, introducing the series. “Our goal is to bring justice to those affected by these tragedies and to highlight the relentless dedication and expertise our team applies to every case. No crash is too small—each one leaves lasting impacts on the lives of those involved.”
The Story of Alex Cerda
The first story in the “Driven to Justice” series focuses on the case of Alex Cerda, who was killed on June 5, 2021, at approximately 3:48 a.m. while riding his bicycle along C.E. King Parkway. Alex had stopped in the right-hand lane of the 8600 block of C.E. King Parkway when a black or dark-colored SUV struck him. The driver did not stop to help, leaving Alex to die on the road.
Despite limited evidence, including blurry surveillance footage and fragments of the vehicle left behind at the scene, Deputy Ben Troyer of the Vehicular Crimes Division remains committed to solving this case.
In the video, Deputy Troyer explains the difficulty of solving hit-and-run cases:
“We need the community’s help to solve this case. The Cerda family have a loved one that was killed in a crash, and they do not have any closure,” says Deputy Troyer. “Someone out there knows something. We can’t bring Alex back, but we can bring some closure to his family.”
Based on the evidence gathered so far, the suspect vehicle is believed to be a dark-colored, large SUV, possibly a black Chevrolet Tahoe.
For Alex’s family, the pain of losing him remains constant. His mother, Zenaida Cerda, shares the agony of not knowing what happened in the final moments of her son’s life: “I don’t know if he was telling me, ‘I love you, Mom,’ or anything. I want peace for my son… I need peace.”
