March 12, 2026 — The Harris County Jail has achieved full compliance with all state standards following the successful implementation of a comprehensive initiative focused on keeping Texas’ largest jail safe for inmates and the people who work there.
The Texas Commission on Jail Standards issued the certificate of compliance after an inspection conducted on March 11, 2026. Texas jails must meet 26 different standards that include health services, supervision, commissary, and the admission and release process.
“Maintaining a safe and secure jail environment under challenging circumstances requires constant vigilance and attention to detail,” said Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. “The detention officers, medical providers, and professional staff who serve in the jail have earned my deep respect and profound gratitude for a job well done. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is committed to operating a jail that reflects our community’s belief that every defendant deserves to feel safe while they await their day in court.”
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for maintaining the care, custody, and control of over 8,300 inmates. Harris County has made significant investments in the jail operation in recent years, which include aggressive pay raises for detention officers and partnering with Harris Health and the Harris Center to provide medical and mental health services. Other recent safety measures include enhanced security screening for everyone entering the jail to prevent the introduction of contraband such as dangerous drugs and weapons.
“Today’s achievement wouldn’t have happened without the crucial support of every member of the Harris County Commissioners Court and the many professionals in our county government who rallied around this effort,” Sheriff Gonzalez said. “This is how good government works.”
