ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Firefighters arrived on scene to find light smoke coming from a house. They made an attack on the fire and conducted a primary search. The fire was quickly controlled, and the home was ventilated with fans. The wall behind the stove was opened to ensure the fire was fully extinguished with fire spread to the cabinets and nearby kitchen surfaces. Oil spilled over while being heated onto a burner and ignited the fire. Due to damage to wiring, the residents were informed to have a certified electrician inspect and repair the issue before turning the power back on to the house. 31 personnel responded to this incident, including firefighters from Stations 6, 19, 12 and 17.
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), “During 2017–2021, cooking was the leading cause of reported home fires and home fire injuries and the second leading cause of home fire deaths.”
Remember to use a moderate cooking temperature, don’t overfill the container, and if you must leave the kitchen, turn the burner off.
