A suspect charged in the fatal shooting of a man at 8501 Broadway Street about 6 p.m. on January 10, 2005, has been arrested.
The suspect, Luis Uriel Castillo, 39, is charged with capital murder in the 263rd Criminal District Court. A booking photo of Castillo is attached to this news release.
The victim is identified as Cornelius Ray, 25.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeant R. Rodriguez and Detective D. Shorten reported:
Officers responded to a deceased male at the above address. The apartment manager had conducted a welfare check on the deceased after concerned friends had not been able to contact the resident for several days. Upon entry into the apartment Mr. Ray was found lying on his bedroom floor. He had suffered a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene by responding Houston Fire Department personnel.
Further investigation identified the suspect as Castillo and, in January 2005, he was charged with capital murder. Investigators learned Castillo had fled to Mexico shortly after the shooting.
In 2021, the FBI located Castillo in Mexico. On Wednesday (Sept. 24), Castillo was extradited back to the United States by the FBI. Upon arrival in Houston, Castillo was taken into custody by HPD Homicide Division Cold Case Unit detectives. Castillo was interviewed by investigators and then booked into the Harris County Jail.
