Houston, TX – Since its founding in 2020, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Violent Criminal Apprehension Team, known as VCAT, has tracked down and arrested more than 500 violent fugitives wanted for murder.
VCAT was created to handle the cases most difficult to close: violent fugitives who flee, hide, and actively resist capture. From serial rapists to murder suspects crossing state lines, the team works alongside homicide investigators to locate and apprehend some of the region’s most dangerous offenders.
Under HCSO protocol, once a murder warrant is signed, VCAT steps in, ensuring cases remain active and suspects are relentlessly pursued until they are taken into custody.
“Every arrest represents a victim, a family, and a community that deserves justice,” said Undersheriff Tommy Diaz. “I am incredibly proud of our VCAT members and the sacrifices they make every day to track down dangerous fugitives and keep our community safe.”
The milestone represents far more than a number. It reflects safer communities, victims’ families given a path toward healing, and the unwavering pursuit of justice for some of Harris County’s most violent offenders.
For members who have served on VCAT since its earliest days, the 500 arrest milestone is deeply personal. The team operates under a shared belief that no violent offender should remain free and that every victim’s family deserves answers.
“My teammates and I take a lot of pride in that, that we are able to get the job done and get these people to justice,” said Detective A. Ramirez of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office VCAT unit.
Five hundred arrests later, VCAT’s mission remains unchanged: find violent offenders, bring them to justice, and ensure the people of Harris County are safer because of it.
