Houston’s 713 Day celebration in 2026 included a visual tribute to a foundational figure in the city’s hip-hop history. Houston Public Media reported that By The Wayside, a cocktail bar in the Second Ward, displayed four newly painted murals of DJ Screw as part of its first 713 Day event.
DJ Screw, whose slowed-down “chopped and screwed” sound remains closely associated with Houston, was at the center of the event’s hometown-pride atmosphere. The celebration was scheduled around the city’s original area code, and the bar paired the murals with a special menu, a vinyl DJ and a display of customized slab cars.
The murals were created with Houston local art collective Free Walls, and artists Donkeeboy, Gabriel Escobedo, SpaceCityArtKreations and w3r3on3 each contributed a piece. The project showed how a Houston music legacy continues to inspire new public art, neighborhood gathering spaces and citywide cultural celebrations long after an artist’s lifetime.
