HOUSTON, TX — The Harris County Jail maintains full compliance with all state standards after successfully passing an unannounced comprehensive inspection conducted by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.
The Texas Commission on Jail Standards notified the Harris County Jail that it passed the comprehensive on-site inspection on Thursday, July 16, 2026. Texas county jails must comply with 26 minimum standards governing jail operations, including health services, inmate supervision, life safety, security, commissary operations, and the admission and release process.
“Maintaining a safe and secure jail environment requires constant vigilance, professionalism, and teamwork,” said Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. “I am proud of the detention officers, medical providers, and professional staff whose commitment to excellence makes achievements like this possible. Their dedication to serving with integrity and ensuring the well-being of those in our care deserves our deepest appreciation.”
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for the care, custody, and control of more than 8,400 inmates. Harris County has continued investing in jail operations through enhanced security measures, competitive pay for detention officers, and partnerships with Harris Health and The Harris Center to provide medical and mental health services.
“The passing of this comprehensive onsite inspection reflects the hard work of our employees and the continued support of the Harris County Commissioners Court and our county partners,” Sheriff Gonzalez said. “We remain committed to operating a jail that is safe, secure, and accountable while treating every person in our custody with dignity and respect.”
