Charges have been filed against a male arrested for the fatal shooting of a man at 11700 Southwest Freeway (South Interstate Highway 59) service road about 6:35 p.m. on May 29.
The suspect, Alexis Garcia, 20, is now charged with murder in the 209th State District Court.  A booking photo of Garcia is attached to this news release.
The victim is identified as Noel Venero Lopez, 55.
HPD Homicide Division Detectives L. Patterson, H. Martinez and S. Chettry reported:
Officers responded to multiple calls for service in the 11700 block of the Southwest Freeway.  When they arrived, they found two vehicles, a gray Dodge Charger and a black Toyota Prius, had been involved in a crash on the service road and were disabled.
A witness stated that following the crash the male driver of the Dodge exited his vehicle and spoke briefly with the driver of the Toyota.  The person of interest then began walking south towards Wilcrest Drive.  He was described as a young Hispanic male with a thin build, mullet-style haircut and wearing black pants and t-shirt.
While officers were gathering information a second witness came forward and stated they saw a male matching the same description walk into traffic.  The witness then heard a gunshot and saw a red Hyundai Elantra speed away.  The witness then stated he turned to where the gunshot had come from and saw the person of interest pointing a gun at him.  The person of interest then stole the witness’ gray Audi SQ5.
The drivers of the Prius and the Audi were uninjured.  The driver of the Hyundai suffered a gunshot wound and was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.
Further investigation determined the Audi was in Corpus Christi, Texas.  An alert was sent out to all local police in the area and Corpus Christi police officers were able to recover the stolen vehicle.  A male matching the person of interest’s description and armed with a handgun was located by officers nearby and was detained.  The person of interest was identified as the suspect, Garcia. On May 30, Garcia was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and theft in 209th State District Court relating to the carjacking incident.
After further investigation and consultation with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, Garcia was charged with capital murder on Tuesday (July 9).  Garcia has been extradited and remains in the Harris County Jail.
