Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of an armed male suspect by Houston Police Officers at 5829 Hartwick Road about 8 a.m. on Sunday (October 5).
The identity of the deceased male is pending notification to family members by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
The two HPD officers who discharged their duty weapons were not injured in this incident. Both are assigned to the Northeast Patrol Division. Officer J. Avila was sworn in as a police officer in May 2022. Officer T. Martin was sworn in as a police officer in May 2021.
HPD Homicide Division Special Investigations Unit Officer K. Vu, M. Childs and B. Rusher reported:
Northeast patrol officers responded to a report of a suspicious person with a weapon at the above address and were told prior to arrival the male was armed with a rifle, walking outside back and forth and talking to himself. He had reportedly discharged the weapon at least one time in an unknown direction.
When officers arrived at the location they observed the suspect armed with the rifle and issued multiple commands for him to drop his weapon. The suspect failed to release the weapon and then positioned himself with the rifle pointed towards the officers. In response, two officers discharged their duty weapons, striking the suspect more than one time.
Responding Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced the male deceased at the scene.
As is customary in officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, the case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit and Internal Affairs Divisions, as well as the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
