Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of a female and the wounding of two males in the 6600 block of Harwin Drive about 2:10 a.m. on Thursday (Oct. 16).
The suspect, Ronnie D. Mitchell, 42, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in the 174th and 230th Criminal District Courts. A booking photo of Mitchell is not available at this time.
The identity of the deceased female is pending notification to family members by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Officer P. Luu, who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured in the incident. Officer Luu was sworn in as an officer in October 2022 and is assigned to the Midwest Patrol Division.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Detectives J. Windham, A. Henderson, and B. Rusher reported:
HPD patrol officers were conducting a traffic stop near the above address when they heard an unrelated disturbance in a nearby alleyway. Officers continued with the traffic stop when they heard gunfire from the location of the disturbance.
An officer witnessed a male discharging a firearm at three individuals. The officer discharged his firearm to protect the safety of the citizens. The suspect, Mitchell, fled the scene, leading police on a brief foot pursuit before he was taken into custody.
Responding patrol units located three individuals with gunshot wounds near the location of the shooting. Houston Fire Department paramedics transported the female to an area hospital where doctors later pronounced her deceased. The two male victims were also transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
At this time, there is no evidence indicating the complainants in this incident were struck or injured by the officer discharging his firearm. This is an ongoing investigation.
As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the Houston city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
