Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of an armed male suspect by an HPD officer at 300 Milam Street about 7:25 p.m. on Sunday (November 23).
The identity of the deceased male suspect is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Officer R. Perales, who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured in this incident. Officer Perales is assigned to the Downtown Patrol Division and was sworn in as an officer in June 2023.
Another officer, J. Garza, was injured in this incident and transported to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center in stable condition. Officer Garza is assigned to the Downtown Patrol Division and was sworn in as an officer in June 2023.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Detectives C. Walker, H. Le, and B. Rusher reported:
HPD officers witnessed a disturbance at a business at the above address. A male was loud, irate, and reaching in his pocket as the officers approached. Officers attempted to calm the suspect down and to detain the suspect for a possible mental health investigation. The suspect refused to obey the officers’ verbal commands and kept reaching in his pocket as he was yelling at the officers in an aggressive manner.
As back-up officers arrived, the officers attempted to take the suspect into custody when the suspect produced a knife and cut one of the officers causing a large laceration on his head. The officers and the suspect all fell to the ground and were wrestling with the suspect in an attempt to take the knife from him and to take him into custody.
An officer fired at the suspect, striking him at least one time. Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced the suspect deceased at the scene.
Paramedics transported the injured officer to the hospital where he was treated and released.
As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the Houston city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
