Houston police are investigating the fatal crash that occurred at 1400 Jefferson Street about 11:20 p.m. on Sunday (January 7).
The identity of the deceased male, 42, is pending notification to family members by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant R. Dallas and Officer T. Syed reported:
The driver of a black Tesla S was traveling eastbound on Jefferson at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the vehicle and struck a gray Toyota Highlander, stopped at a red light on Jefferson at the intersection with La Branch. The Tesla continued through the intersection, left the roadway and struck the concrete wall of a parking garage. The driver of the Telsa was pronounced dead at the scene by responding Houston Fire Department paramedics.
The passenger in the Tesla was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital with non life-threatening injuries. Both the driver and the passenger in the Toyota were uninjured.
The investigation is continuing.
