Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of a man at 8429 Bonner Drive about 9 p.m. on Tuesday (Sept. 30).
The suspect, Angel Ortiz, 21, is charged with murder in the 179th Criminal District Court. A booking photo of Ortiz is attached to this news release.
The identity of the victim, 20, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Homicide Division Detectives L. Patterson and C. Vaughn reported:
HPD patrol officers responded to a shooting call at a residence at the above address and found an an unresponsive male in the driveway. He had suffered a gunshot wound and Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced him deceased at the scene.
Further investigation revealed  the victim and suspect were talking when the suspect picked up a rifle and pointed it at the victim.  The suspect, identified as Ortiz, then lowered the rifle, charged the weapon and then raises the rifle and fires, striking the victim.  Ortiz initially left the scene, but returned and was taken into custody.
Ortiz admitted to his role in the shooting, stating it was an accident. Detectives consulted the Harris County District Attorney’s office and a murder charge was accepted. The suspect was taken into custody and booked into the Harris County jail.
