Suspect Charged, Arrested in Fatal Crash at 6000 Southwest Freeway

Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in a fatal crash in the 6000 block of Southwest Freeway (South U.S. Highway 59) about 1:45 a.m. on July 19.
The suspect, Niya Esther Maman, 20, is charged intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle in the 180th Criminal District Court. A booking photo of Maman is attached to this news release.
The identity of the deceased female, 26, is pending notification to family members by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant A. Yasin and Officer J. Quezada reported:
A blue Acura RSX lost its front bumper while traveling northbound on the freeway. The vehicle pulled onto the left shoulder and the male driver exited the Acura to retrieve the bumper from the roadway. A passenger remained inside the vehicle.
A gray Ford Mustang also traveling northbound grazed the driver then crashed into the rear of the Acura. The impact caused both vehicles to catch fire. The Houston Fire Department pronounced the passenger inside the Acura deceased at the scene.
The driver of the Acura, 27, was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries.
Maman, the driver of Ford, was not injured and was determined to be impaired. She was arrested and charged for her role in this incident.
