Investigation into Fatal Crash at 600 West 11th Street
Houston police are investigating the fatal crash that occurred at 600 West 11th Street about 4:25 a.m. on Saturday (August 15).
The identity of the deceased male, 52, is pending notification to family members by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant D. Hall and Officer J. Baker reported:
Officers responded to a report of a male driving a silver Toyota 4Runner burglarizing vehicles in an apartment complex parking garage at 2825 West 11th Street. When officers arrived, a vehicle matching the description of the reported suspect vehicle was seen leaving the parking garage at a high rate of speed. The driver of the vehicle then blacked out their lights and began traveling eastbound on West 11th street.
When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, it sped up and ran through several intersections. The driver then made a turn, and the officer lost sight of the vehicle. When the officers got to the 600 block of West 11th they found the vehicle had driven over a bike lane curb, lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree. The vehicle then caught fire. Officers were able to extinguish the fire with fire extinguishers however they were not able to get the male out of the vehicle. When Houston Fire Department personnel arrived, they pronounced the male deceased at the scene.
The investigation is continuing.
